The Fundaci? Mies van der Rohe was set up in 1983 by the Barcelona City Hall with the initial purpose of reconstructing the German Pavilion, designed by Ludwig Mies van der (1886-1969) for the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition
Whilst the original aspiration in essence was to create a 'glass box in the woods'; this was expanded to include water as a major element and the desire to dematerialise the relationship between outside and inside space and to create a series of outside rooms of different experiences.
The mission of the Glass House was to be a center point and catalyst for the preservation of modern architecture, art and landscape.
