Iconic, Modern Tables and Chairs.

Iconic occasional table, that took 30 years to design; depicted in bleached American White Ash, that one simply has to touch.

Also available in limed European Oak in various formats and sizes to order, including side tables, consul tables and sofa tables.

A brief history of the design:

Tim, who trained under John Makepeace and who at the time had recently joined my workshop from a prestigious small group of artisans, working under the patronage of The Duchess of Westminster; had been asked to make a range of interior furniture for Eaton Hall.

...just could not escape the 'box.'

I had made numerous attempts over several decades to design modern furniture but, not unlike many, just could not escape the 'box.'

But after a fortnight or so of sketching and computer modelling, a design finally clicked into place. We prototyped several formats but settled for the design above.

I fell in love with it immediately.

I fell in love with it immediatley and realising that I had finally designed, what for me, was the epitomy of a classic modern table; I set about, with Tim's help, to design a totally different set of furniture for Eaton Hall.

...the world seems a more tranquil and better place.

Ten years on, I still cannot fault the design. Ever time I feast my eyes on it, I feel humbled and the world seems a more tranquil and better place.

Apart from true functionality and ergonomics considerations, this for me is what good design should do.

...it is beauty itself.

Claudio Silvestrin wrote "...such a sight absorbs you completely - it is beauty itself.

I was thirteen at the time and the Archbishop of Canterbury had come to conduct the service in my local church to consecrate a new and as I recall, quite beautiful 'stained glass window' over the alter.

I was chosen to serve with the Archbishop but halfway through the service feinted, falling backwards down the alter steps hitting my back on an alter table. Much later in life I was diagnosed as having arthritis of two vertebrae in my lower spine.

... a chair that supports ones back without putting pressure on the spine.

So when asked to design and make a dining table and chairs for a client who suffered back pain, I took the opportunity to design a chair that supports ones back without putting pressure on the spine.

When one looks at the chair designs available, one can be forgiven for being hugely disappointed. We managed to send men to the moon and back, decades ago, yet chair designs not unlike so much so-called design in our lives, have developed little since the Roman times.

I admit the design of my first chair does actually encourage one to sit up straight and in complete comfort. No longer does one slump, for it is actually more comfortable to sit tall.

...a master- class in iconic design

Some claim that it reminds them of the beautiful Charles Rennie Mackintosh chair, which although a master-class in iconic design, sadly offers no support for the spine whatsoever.

...a somewhat more tactile if not sensual chair

Since that first early, fairly basic traditional design, I have developed a somewhat more tactile if not sensual, modern sprung version, perceived as a high-tech 'comfortable' update of the classic Mackintosh chair in carbon-fibre. Depicted 'nude' in soft-bronze metalic veneer, without optional soft leather seat-saddle and soft leather head-cushion. As well as optional veneers, a complete soft leather tight-fitting padded 'body suit' is available.
